Grade 3CR12 stainless steel is a low cost grade of chromium containing stainless steel made by modifying the properties of grade 409 steel.It resists mild corrosion and wet wear.It was originally developed by Columbus Stainless Company under the registered trademark “3CR12″.Other names for this grade include UNS S40977/S41003 and 1.4003.
Other designations equivalent to 3CR12 grades include ASME SA240 grades, ASTM A240/A240M grades, and EN 10088.2.However, EN 10028.7 also covers class 1.4003, which constitutes stainless steel for pressure purposes.
The following sections will provide the key properties of grade 3CR12 stainless steel coil, sheet and plate in compliance with Euronorm S41003, S40977, ASTM A240/A240M and EN 10088.2 1.4003.

Grade 3CR12 stainless steel can be used in applications where aluminum, galvanized or carbon steel provides poor results because of its resistance to strong acids and bases, as well as cracking caused by chloride stress corrosion.However, unlike Grade 304, Grade 3CR12 has the lowest resistance to crevice and pitting corrosion in the presence of chlorides.
Under ambient conditions, the 3CR12 grade has improved tolerance to water and chlorides, as the corrosiveness of the chloride content is mitigated by nitrate and sulfate ions.One of the main disadvantages of grade 3CR12 is that the surface of the material is slightly corroded when exposed to any type of environment.It is for this reason that the material is limited to decorative applications.
3CR12 grade stainless steel exhibits fouling resistance between 600 and 750°C in the presence of air and between 450 and 600°C in a pressurized environment.The material becomes brittle with prolonged exposure to temperatures between 450 and 550°C.However, the material does not lose its impact resistance in this temperature range.
Grade 3CR12 stainless steel is annealed at 700 to 750°C, divided into 25mm sections, each section soaked for 1.5 hours.Then let the material cool.Care should be taken to prevent hardening during heat treatment.The mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of this grade are affected by the quenching treatment.
The welding methods used for austenitic stainless steels can be applied to grade 3CR12 stainless steels.Consider low heat input technologies such as GMAW (MIG) and GTAW (TIG).In welding, grade 309 filler wire pre-certified to AS 1554.6 is preferred.However, 308L, 316L, 309Mo and 309L grades of wire are also used in many cases.Any discoloration in the soldered product can be removed using support gas or techniques such as cleaning and pickling.
The machinability of 3CR12 grade stainless steel is approximately 60% of that of mild steel.Their work hardening rate is lower than that of austenitic steels, so no special machining methods are required.
Grade 3CR12 stainless steel sheets are available in a standard Hot Rolled Annealed and Pickled (HRAP) finish, and coils are available in a 2B or 2D finish.Black finishes can also be produced from hot rolled material, leaving a black oxidized surface on the steel.3CR12 grade black finish has good corrosion resistance and low friction, so it is suitable for different wear applications.
