The difference between seamless pipe and ERW stainless steel pipe

There are some differences between ERW stainless steel pipe and stainless steel seamless pipe. ERW Pipe is short for Electric Resistance Welding. It is used to transport liquids such as fuels, gases, etc., regardless of pressure, and plays an important role in pipelines around the world. At the same time, it is a seamless steel pipe. Square and rectangular steel pipes without joints and hollow profiles are used for the transport of liquids due to their outstanding high bending and torsion strength, as well as for the manufacture of structural and mechanical parts. In general, ERW pipes and seamless steel pipes are used for a variety of purposes.
Seamless stainless steel pipes are made from round billets, while ERW stainless steel pipes are made from hot rolled coils. Although the two raw materials are completely different, it should be noted that the quality of the final product – pipes is completely dependent on these two factors – quality control during production and the initial condition and quality of raw materials. Both pipes are made of stainless steel of different grades, but the most common is a pipe made of stainless steel 304.
The round billet is heated and pushed onto the perforated rod until it takes on a hollow shape. Subsequently, their length and thickness are controlled by extrusion methods. In the case of the production of ERW pipes, the production process is completely different. The roll is bent in the axial direction, and the converging edges are welded along its entire length by resistance welding.
Seamless stainless steel tubes are fully assembled on the assembly line and are available in OD up to 26 inches. On the other hand, even the most advanced steel companies with ERW technology can only achieve an outside diameter of 24 inches.
Since seamless pipes are extruded, they do not have joints in either the axial or radial direction. ERW pipes, on the other hand, are made by bending coils along their central axis so they are welded along their entire length.
Generally, seamless pipes are used for high pressure applications, while ERW pipes are used for service in low and medium pressure areas.
In addition, given the inherent safety characteristics of seamless pipes, they are widely used in oil and gas, oil refining and other chemical industries, and a no-leakage policy is required to ensure the safety of people and enterprises. At the same time, well-made ERW pipes under strict quality control can also be used for similar services other than ordinary services such as water transportation, scaffolding and fencing.
It is known that the interior finish of ERW pipes is always controlled by good quality control methods, so they are always better than seamless pipes.
In the case of ASTM A53, type S means seamless. Type F – furnace, but welding, type E – resistance welding. That’s all. This is the easiest way to determine if a pipe is seamless or ERW.
Tip: ASTM A53 Grade B is more popular than other grades. These pipes can be bare without any coating, or they can be galvanized or hot-dip galvanized and manufactured using a welded or seamless manufacturing process. In the oil and gas sector, A53 pipes are used for structural and non-critical applications.
