Local reports and a mill official said the shelling of Metinvest longs and flats producer Azovstal had disrupted its ability to operate.
The factory is located in the besieged Ukrainian city of Mariupol.Sources told MetalMiner that the extent of the damage to the site remains unclear at this time.
The MetalMiner team will continue to analyze the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war on the metals markets in the Monthly Metals Outlook (MMO) report, available to subscribers on the first business day of each month.
A March 17 video from Turkish news outlet Anadolu Agency showed the factory being shelled. The attack destroyed Azovstal’s coking plant.Ukrainian media said the factory was also targeted for the capture of Mariupol.
Information on the Azovstal website shows that there are three coking cells on site. These plants can produce 1.82 million tons of coke and coal products per year.
Azovstal’s general manager, Enver Tskitishvili, said in a video received by MetalMiner on March 19 that the coke battery attacks did not pose a danger because they were quelled within days of Russia’s incursion into Ukraine.
Five blast furnaces on site were shut down.Tskitishvili noted that by the time of the attack, they had cooled.
Metinvest announced on February 24 that it would put the plant and nearby Ilyich Steel in conservation mode.
As the war continues and affects the metal industry in Russia and Ukraine (and end users elsewhere), the MetalMiner team will break it down in the MetalMiner weekly newsletter.
Azovstal has five blast furnaces producing 5.55 million tons of pig iron. The plant’s converter workshop has two 350-metric-ton basic oxygen furnaces capable of pouring 5.3 million tons of crude steel.
Further downstream, Azovstal has four continuous casters for slab production, as well as an ingot caster.
Azovstal’s Mill 3600 produces 1.95 million tonnes of plate per year. The mill produces 6-200mm gauges and 1,500-3,300mm widths.
The Mill 1200 produces billets for further rolling of long products. At the same time, the Mill 1000/800 can roll up to 1.42 million tons of rail and bar products.
Information from Azovstal also indicates that the Mill 800/650 can produce heavy profiles of up to 950,000 metric tons.
Mariupol has the largest port facility in the Sea of Azov, leading to the Black Sea through the Russian-controlled Kerch Strait.
The city has been heavily bombed as Russian troops try to clear the land corridor between the Crimean peninsula, annexed from Ukraine in 2014, and Ukraine’s breakaway regions of Donetsk and Luhansk.
