Who it’s for: Golfers who like the look and forgiveness of a high MOI mallet who want to improve their alignment and increase consistency on the green.
The Skinny: The three new Wingman 700 series putters feature softer face inserts than the original Wingman for enhanced sound and feel, but still offer a lot of forgiveness thanks to extreme perimeter weighting and multi-material design sex.
The Deep Dive: The first Tour Edge Exotics Wingman putter was released in 2020, and now the company hopes to expand the mallet’s popularity by offering three different head shapes, each with two types of hosel choose. However, key technology runs through all three clubs.
Every 700-series putter has an angular shape, and the first thing most golfers will notice when putting it down and tackling it is the locking alignment technology. It’s a pair of black areas at the top of the club, each with a white alignment line in the center. The idea is that when your eye is in place above the ball, the lines will appear to be joined, but if your eye is too close to the inside or outside, the white stripes don’t seem to touch. It’s a useful and simple way to ensure you’re ready to catch the ball and in good position before every putt.
Each of the three 700 Series mallets is cast from stainless steel, but a large portion of the sole is covered with carbon fiber panels, reducing stainless steel usage by 34 percent. This does two important things.First, it moves the weight out of the middle of the club and creates perimeter weight.Second, it allows designers to save discretionary weight by using carbon fiber and repurpose it for interchangeable sole weights in the heel and toe area.700 Series putters come with a 3-gram weight, but 8-gram and 15-gram weights are available in kits sold separately.Weights further increase the moment of inertia (MOI) to help the club resist twist on off-center hits.
The carbon fiber soleplate saves weight and can be redistributed to the sole weight for increased MOI.(Tour on the edge)
Finally, the MicroGroove face is designed to encourage the ball to start rolling instead of slipping for better speed control, but Tour Edge opted to use a softer thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) to create a softer feel.
The Exotics Wingman 701 and 702 have the same head, with a pair of extensions on the heel and toe wings to support the weight of the sole. They have the highest MOI and maximum stability, the 701 has 30 degrees of toe drop thanks to the short torticollis. It should be ideal for players with a slightly arched putter, and the 702′s double-curved hosel balances its face for straight-backed, straight-shooting golfers.
The Exotics Wingman 703 and 704 have a slightly smaller head and lack the 701 and 702 extensions to the rear of the heel and toe wings. The weight of the sole is also head-forward.The 703 has a short torticollis neck, while the 704 has a double bend neck.
Finally, the 705 and 706 are the most compact, with sole weight in the front. The 705 is designed for golfers with a curved putter, while the 706 is face balanced.
