Sandvik Materials Technology, a developer and producer of advanced stainless steels and specialty alloys, has won its first “waste-to-energy order” for its unique Sanicro 35 grade. The facility will use Sanicro 35 in the process to convert and upgrade biogas or landfill gas into renewable natural gas, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global climate change.
Sanicro 35 will replace failed heat exchanger tubes made of 316L stainless steel at a renewable natural gas plant in Texas. The facility converts and upgrades biogas or landfill gas into renewable natural gas, which can be used as an alternative to natural gas in a range of applications, including fuel. For example, compressed natural gas, power generation, thermal energy or as a feedstock for the chemical industry.
The plant’s original heat exchanger tubes failed within six months due to exposure to a corrosive environment. These include condensation and formation of acids, organic compounds and salts produced during the conversion of biogas to renewable natural gas.The operation of landfill gas power generation helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global climate change.
Sanicro 35 has excellent performance, strength and corrosion resistance over a wide temperature range.Designed for extremely corrosive environments, Sanicro 35 is ideal for heat exchangers, and Sandvik Materials Technology recommends Sanicro 35 as it extends the life of heat exchangers while reducing service and maintenance costs .
“We are very pleased to announce our first reference order for Sanicro® 35 with a renewable natural gas plant. This is in line with our drive to be part of the energy transition. We are delivering on materials, products and solutions for the renewable energy sector With in-depth knowledge of the options, we look forward to demonstrating the operational and environmental benefits that Sanicro 35 can bring to heat exchanger applications in biomass plants,” said Luiza Esteves, Technical Marketing Engineer, Sandvik Materials Technology.Sandvik Materials Technology has an in-depth knowledge of material solutions in the renewable energy sector.Going forward, Sandvik Materials Technology will focus more on driving sustainability and supporting the energy transition through its products.
