The state-owned SAIL said on Monday it had supplied special-grade stainless steel from the Salem Steel Mill for the Chandrayaan-2 lunar mission.
“The Steel Authority of India (SAIL) has supplied special quality stainless steel for India’s Chandrayaan-2 lunar mission from its Salem steel plant, meeting ISRO requirements for stringent specifications, excellent surface finish and tight tolerances,” SAIL said in a statement. in a statement.
Previously, SAIL also partnered with ISRO to supply high quality steel for prestigious domestic space missions.
Together with ISRO, SAIL has taken a big step forward through Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Make in India” initiative to in-house develop “Exotic Russian Grade Austenitic Stabilized Stainless Steel ICSS-1218-321 (12X18H10T) for the construction of Cryogenic Rocket Engines manufactured by ISRO.”
Through this program, scientists from the ISRO Fluid Propulsion Center and the SAIL team at the Salem Steel Mill worked closely to roll stainless steel coils in Salem.
With this breakthrough, SAIL is optimistic about the future use of other aerospace grade stainless steels for space launch vehicle components.
Seeking to make “billions of dreams on the Moon” come true, India on Monday successfully launched its second Chandrayaan-2 lunar mission aboard its high-powered GSLV-MkIII-M1 rocket from the spaceport to explore the unknown celestial South Pole. Landing on an all-terrain vehicle.
