Today we’ve printed the full 2022 BusinessLive list of the 500 largest businesses in Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
The 2022 list has been compiled by researchers from De Montfort University, Derby University and Nottingham Trent University Business School, supported by the East Midlands Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by Leicester property developer Bradgate Estates.
Because of the way the list is compiled, it does not use the latest accounting data published on Companies House, but rather the accounts submitted between July 2019 and June 2020.That means some of those numbers are tied to the start of the pandemic.
However, they still provide an indicator of the reach and strength of the three counties.
Last month, the WBA scrapped plans to sell it, saying it would keep the Boots and No7 beauty brands under existing ownership following an “unexpected dramatic change” in financial markets.
The Boots brand, which has 2,000 UK stores, saw sales rise 13.5% in the three months to May, as shoppers returned to Britain’s high streets and beauty sales performed well.
Headquartered in Grove Park, Leicester, Sytner has built a solid reputation as a retailer of new and used car brands for some of the UK’s most prestigious car brands.
Founded in 1989, it represents more than 20 car manufacturers in more than 160 UK locations under the Evans Halshaw, Stratstone and Car Store brands.
The business has remained strong due to the positive approach taken during Covid-19, the subsequent global inventory shortage, a general shortage of HGV drivers (in part due to Brexit), higher international freight costs and recent price increases.
Founded in 1982, Mike Ashley’s Retail Group is the UK’s largest sporting goods retailer by revenue, operating a diverse portfolio of sports, fitness, fashion and lifestyle signs and brands.
The group also wholesales and licenses its brands to partners in the UK, continental Europe, the Americas and the Far East.
Mr Ashley recently sold Newcastle United Football Club and was one of the parties interested in taking over Derby County before selling it to Clowes Developments last week.
The UK’s largest homebuilder has lost more than £1.3bn in sales due to the lockdown – which is reflected in the figures used here.
Revenue at Leicestershire-based Barratt Developments fell by almost 30 per cent to £3.42bn in the year to June 30, 2020.
Meanwhile, profit before tax was almost halved – at £492m, compared to £910m last year.
In 1989, Japanese car manufacturing giant Toyota announced plans to build its first European factory in Burnaston, near Derby, and in December of the same year Toyota Motor Manufacturing Company (UK) was established.
Today, most cars produced in Burnaston are hybrids, running on a combination of petrol and electricity.
Eco-Bat Technologies is the world’s largest lead producer and recycler, offering a closed recycling cycle for lead-acid batteries.
Established in 1969, Bloor Homes in Measham is building more than 2,000 homes a year – everything from one-bedroom apartments to seven-bedroom luxury homes.
In the 1980s, founder John Bloor used the money he made in home building to reinvigorate the Triumph Motorcycles brand, relocating it to Hinkley and opening factories around the world.
Key dates in the chain’s growth include the opening of its first store in Leicester in 1930, the development of the first Wilko-branded paint range in 1973, and the first online customer in 2007.
It has over 400 stores in the UK and is rapidly growing wilko.com with over 200,000 products.
Greencore Group plc is a leading manufacturer of convenience foods, supplying refrigerated, frozen and ambient food to some of the UK’s most successful retail and foodservice customers.
Its team of chefs create more than 1,000 new recipes each year and work hard to ensure our products are fresh, nutritious and delicious.
One of the UK’s largest construction and infrastructure specialists, Aggregate Industries is based in north west Leicestershire.
The aggregates industry is a £1.3 billion business with more than 200 sites and more than 3,500 employees, producing everything from construction aggregates to bitumen, ready-mix and precast concrete products.
The Melton Mowbray-based family business is one of the UK’s largest manufacturers of sandwiches and wraps, its main business area and a market leader in appetizers and pies.
It owns the Ginsters and West Cornwall Pasty businesses, the Soreen Malt Bread and SCI-MX sports nutrition businesses, as well as Walker and Son pork pies, Dickinson and Morris pork pies, Higgidy and Walkers sausages.
Caterpillar also topped the list.More than 60 years ago, the American machinery giant established its first major factory outside the United States in the UK.
Today, its main assembly operations are located in Desford, Leicestershire.The main industries Caterpillar serves in the UK include mining, marine, construction, industrial, quarry and aggregate, and power.
Nottingham-based recruitment giant Staffline is the UK’s leading supplier of flexible blue-collar workers, providing tens of thousands of employees a day across hundreds of client sites in industries such as agriculture, supermarkets, beverages, driving, food processing, logistics and manufacturing.
Dating back to 1923, B+K has grown into one of the UK’s most successful private construction and development groups.
There are 27 companies within the group specialising in construction and construction-related activities with a combined turnover of over £1 billion.
Back in the spring, Dunelm’s bosses said the Leicestershire retailer could “accelerate” price increases in the coming months amid soaring costs.
Chief executive Nick Wilkinson told PA News that the company had kept prices flat for previous years but had recently implemented price increases and expects more to come.
Rolls-Royce is Derbyshire’s largest private sector employer, with around 12,000 employees working in the city.
Two Rolls-Royce businesses are located in Derby – its civil aviation division and its defence division make nuclear power plants for Royal Navy submarines.Rolls-Royce has been in Derby for over 100 years.
The “recent” car retailer, which has 17 stores in the UK, said recently that higher car prices combined with a larger market share helped drive growth.
The business continues to expand its share of the used car market and has medium-term plans to open new stores​​ and grow revenue to £2bn.
In February 2021, Derby-based train maker Bombardier Transport was sold to French group Alstom for £4.9 billion.
In the deal, the assets of the 2,000-employee Litchurch Lane factory were transferred to a new owner.
